Handicrafts trade facilitation centre opens in Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the Deendayal Hastkala Sankul, a trade facilitation centre for handicrafts at Varanasi, to the nation last week. Its foundation stone was laid by him in November 2014 at and the first phase of the project, comprising a crafts museum, an entrance plaza and a shopping arcade, was inaugurated by him in December 2016. 

Inaugurating the centre, Modi said it would help artisans and weavers showcase their skills to the world, facilitate a better future for them, attract tourists and boost the local economy. With a cost of about Rs 300 crore, the project covers 7.93 acres, according to press release from the textiles ministry.

IHGF handicrafts spring 2017 fair to take place in Delhi

HGF- Delhi Fair Spring 2017, the 43rd edition of the world's largest handicrafts and gifts fair, will open on February 16, 2017 in Delhi. More than 3,000 exhibitors including 900 permanent marts from all over the country will showcase a wide range of products belonging to 14 product categories at the event. Over 6,500 buyers are expected to visit the fair.

The fair organised by the Export Promotion Council For Handicrafts (EPCH) will be spread over an area of 1,97,000 square metres and host buyers from over 80 countries. Buying agents based in India and domestic retail volume buyers are also expected to visit the mega fair to source their requirements.

Odisha mulls WB help to boost textile, handicrafts sector

The Odisha state government has decided to seek support from the World Bank (WB) to develop its textile, handloom and handicrafts sector. A meeting of senior officials from both sides was held recently in Bhubaneswar to finalize a project to raise the income of the artisans and weavers by increasing domestic sale and exports and standardise design patterns. 

“No financial decision has been taken yet on the project. We expressed Odisha government’s keen interest and they also expressed theirs,” the state’s development commissioner R BalaKrishnan told media persons.

KVIC to set up 7-8 khadi centres in Meghalaya

Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is planning to set up 7 to 8 khadi centres in the state of Meghalaya this year, said the organisation's chairman Vinay Kumar Saxena. Each centre's estimated cost is Rs 9 lakh and the annual production is likely to be around Rs 16 to Rs 17 lakh. They are also expected to provide employment to locals.

The chairman of KVIC added that state's khadi activities were not up to the mark. The required attention was not given to khadi in the last 20 years in spite of the fact that the industry has the potential to generate employment for the people of Meghalaya.
